My favorite part of our Ireland trip? Definitely had to be the Harry Potter trivia. Reading, watching and studying fandoms is kind of my thing and Harry Potter is my favorite book series. J.K. Rowling not only crafts amazing stories but she crafts them in vivid detail, so that every time you read the Harry Potter books you come upon a new little gem she has written. This also makes her books perfect for trivia because there is a plethora of literary nooks and crannies in which to find good questions to ask and details to study. Planning ahead, each member of the family chose and read one book and then wrote a minimum of 10 questions from it. The questions could come from any part of the book and could be as specific or vague as possible. In addition to 10 trivia questions we also had to provide at least 2 questions that had more than 7 answers to as many as we wanted. We had to list each of the answers for these questions. When the time came for trivia these questions were between two people, the person who could name the most answers would win the question. In addition to book specific questions, we also had a category of questions for characters, spells, J.K. Rowling, movie actors well as questions from the additional books Rowling wrote like Tales of Beatle and the Bard, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
On a side note, the movie for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them comes out in November. The book is exclusively a categorization and description of traits and appearances of Magical Beasts but the movie is more about the author Newt Scamander while incorporating many of the beasts he categorizes in the book. This new movie will open a whole new world to the Harry Potter fandom as the screenplay is written by Rowling and is official Harry Potter History, not just cannon, so when that movie comes out it will be a very big deal as we learn not only more about Fantastic Beasts and Where to find them, but also about 1920s magic and the wizarding world in America, including their government system and possibly more about Ilvermorny the American wizarding school. Now back to our Trivia competition.
There were three teams, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Slytherpuff.
Gryffindor was Daddy, Mark and me (our scarf and notebook),
Ravenclaw was Ethan and Allison,
and Slytherpuff was Mommy and Rebecca - Hufflepuff and Hannah - Slytherin and later also included the babies House - Pufflepants.
There were three main games in which to earn house points. the first was Wheel of Fortune. Picking a question from a bowl, if answered correctly, would earn you one letter to guess in a quote from any of the 7 original Harry Potter books. Vowels cost 50 points and the quotes could be from a short 5 words to a full paragraphs.
The second way in which to earn points was playing in Jeopardy. Once asked, the question would go to any team who raised their hand or said their name first. These two games each allowed only one player to participate and answer completely on their own pulling from their own knowledge and trivia answering skills only.
The third way to earn points was Potions: cooking or preparing dinner for everyone and being ranked from 5-10 on Appearance, Taste, Health and Preparation.
Oh also, we all went paddle boarding one of the day there and earned points while participating in games and competitions there as well as playing, (Ultimate frisbee) earned 50 points every time we scored. All these points were recorded and added up in each of our house journals.
Overall all teams performed admirably. Gryffindor won many of our points in the physical challenges as many in Jeopardy, but performed less admirably in Wheel of Fortune. Ravenclaw dominated in Jeopardy, earning at least 65% of their points in that one game as well as most of the rest in a few very high scoring quotes on Wheel of Fortune. Slytherpuff earned the majority of their in Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune and it was a close couple days, but in the end, Ravenclaw beat Gryffindor and Sltherpuff by about 1000 points, gryffindor coming in second and Slytherpuff in third. Many difficult and questions were answered by skill and immense knowledge alone and points were earned with faith teamwork and speed in reflexes. So ended the first Kennedy Harry Potter Trivia event.
