The Merry Ploughboy Pub

It's hard for me to pick one favorite thing about our trip to Ireland.  Ireland is my favorite place in the world, and just being there is all I could ask for.  We did some 'sploring, ate delicious food, and played trivia for my favorite books, Harry Potter.  And best of all, I was with my family.  It's hard for me to be so far away from my family while I'm at school, so it was wonderful to have them all with me for a whole week in my favorite place.  What more could a girl ask for?

There are many reasons I love Ireland.  It's absolutely gorgeous and green, and it has so many wonderful places to go.  The people are some of the friendliest in the world(in my opinion). As Mommy likes to say, it's like talking to leprechauns all day.  Seeing sheep and their little lambs as we drive brings immense happiness to my heart, because I love cute things.  But most of all, I love the Irish culture because it is where my family originated.  The name Kennedy is completely Irish.  I love having Irish ancestors, and I almost wish they hadn't left, because it means I might have been born in Ireland.  Anyway, I take great pride in my Irish ancestry, right down to the Claddagh ring I wear everyday and the week I spend celebrating Saint Patrick's day.  So when the time came on Saturday night to go the Merry Ploughboy Pub, I was SO ready.

The Merry Ploughboy is a pub outside of Dublin owned by musicians.  Mommy and Daddy went there on their last trip to Ireland, and absolutely loved it, so I was really excited to go.  We met the Fingletons there, and they brought a ginormous bag of Irish candy with them, but we were just excited to see them again.  We all went inside and upstairs, and were seated.

The Merry Ploughboy experience consists of dinner and a show.  We started off with delicious, soft, and crumbly brown bread with butter, and moved on to our appetizers.  I decided on the seafood chowder, despite not being a big seafood person.  It was incredible.  I mean really delicious.  And presented so beautifully.  Our entrees were also delicious.  I opted for the lamb, but there was also fish and chicken, both of which looked super tasty.  But dessert really took the cake(or pie :P) It was this sweet, soft apple pie, and you know it was tasty, because Glo finished it in about thirty seconds.  And when Glo likes something, you know it must be good :) Even though I was full, I made room for that pie.  Mmmm.

Then the show began.  The Merry Ploughboys took center stage, and played gorgeous Irish melodies, including Carrick-fergus, the Rocky Road to Dublin, and Tell Me Ma.  The last is a personal favorite, because we sang it in Master Singers my senior year of high school.  I couldn't focus on anything but the music.  It was perfect.  Normally I take video or recordings of music I love, but I was so focused on the music that I completely forgot.  It was the epitome of Irish culture for me.  But little did I know.

I have always loved Irish dance.  I love the costumes, the steps, and the music.  I knew that there would be music at the pub, but I didn't know there would be dancing too.  Turns out, the MP takes dancers from a nearby studio, and asks them to perform at their shows.  Four high school age dancers came out and boy did they cut an Irish rug.  There's no way to describe it, but I loved it.

Overall, it was just a really fun night.  It was fun being with my family and hearing the music and watching the dancers.  Afterwards, I went to buy a t-shirt and all four dancers were standing there, so of course I got a picture, thanks to Mommy.

And of course, I had to take a picture of the rules of the pub, because when in Ireland... Most don't apply since we don't drink, but they're still fun to read.  And per the usual, I was sitting next to an older couple, and they talked to me almost the entire time :)

Stuck Between a Rock and a Hard Place

I'm writing this, not as a complaint, but as a plea.  If anyone has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it. My children are talented.  In fact, every child that I have ever met is talented in some way.  That's the fun thing about meeting kids--discovering those hidden talents. Some of the talents my children possess are very public--you guessed it...music.  Some aren't so public--kindness and generosity. My kids are frequently judged by other children because of their musical talents.  Other kids see them as "snobs" because they play their instruments well and because they are willing to share those talents whenever asked. My kids never play with arrogance.  They recognize that they are better at music than most kids their age, but they never, ever show it.  In fact, they are very generous with compliments towards other kids and their efforts with music.  I have raised them to appreciate anyone who tries to do anything with music--it's ...

Redefining Charity

I like attending church on Sunday for many different reasons, but I dislike the meetings for one very large reason:  discussions regarding charity. In case you don't remember your Sunday School lessons, charity is defined as the pure love of Christ.  If you were to actually look up the word in a dictionary, it would say, "See John Kennedy". That's right.  My wonderful husband is the perfect embodiment of charity. His life basically moves from one charitable act to another. Take any given Saturday.  He can found building some large structure on our property because I think we need it.  He can be found, rebuilding a pond for an old Indian woman who lives alone and needs some help.  On his way to a church picnic, he will stop to help an old woman reseal her driveway, missing one of his favorite meals in the world:  a POTLUCK! Other days?  He stops to help any person on the side of the road with car troubles. He'll drive 2.5 hours to a ...

The TOOTH that Broke the Camel's Back

1.  Take an already busy doctor and install an EMR (Electronic Medical Record) in his office.  Kiss him goodnight at midnight as he begins to "preload" charts for future visits. 2.  Host a general authority of the church for our stake conference this weekend.  Receive a long "to do" list of jobs just five days before the conference. 3.  Feel stress because John is stressed.  Try to do his jobs around the house so that he doesn't have to worry about them. 4.  Have 16 puppies. 5.  Decide to build outside area for puppies.  Borrow backhoe from neighbor.  Watch John work long past the setting sun, and wake up before anyone else to dig. 6.  Use our own tractor to move the dirt.  Watch bucket malfunction, cut the fuel line and destroy the fuel pump.  Try to catch the leaking diesel fuel in a bucket. 7.  Catch cold last weekend.  Dread colds like a hemophiliac dreads a small cut.  Nurse fever, congestio...
