Baby's Birthday

For Baby’s ninth birthday, we were just hoping that Ethan and Rebecca could find a day in their busy schedules to come up and see us….and they did!

Thankfully (and I mean that with a candy bowl full of sincerity) Glo is living at home at the moment, and she was more than happy to take over the decorating duties.  Decorating the Kennedy home for Halloween is no easy task, but she took it on.  Just getting the tubs out of the basement requires Herculean strength, and then sorting through the decorations to find the good ones is also daunting.

We had gone to dinner with John’s brother, Jacob, and his girlfriend and few weeks earlier, and the girlfriend friended me on Facebook.  She had posted a photo of hanging hats and candles in her front hall (which looked darling) so I got on Amazon and ordered more candles than we could use for a while.  Hanging taper candles and column candles.  Like, 150 of them at least.  With Glo’s excellent discretion and discerning eye, we really did create the Kennedy haunted mansion.

I searched high and low for a Halloween dress for Baby, but they don’t seem to be on trend as much as they used to.  I eventually bought her a black dress with orange and white striped leggings.  I also got her a new pair of white Adidas tennis shoes since I assumed she had grown out of the ones Glo gave her last year for her baptism. It’s so fun to see that she now embraces having a birthday so close to Halloween—she’s 100% in on everything.

We let Baby choose a lot of what we did for the day, and how fun that she chose to go to the Dexter path.
John, Ethan, Gordon, Mark, and Everett took off running (yes, Everett!) while the rest of us walked.  Rebecca commented at one point that she probably needs to start running again, because Baby is definitely following in her walking footsteps (even though she’s in a little running club).  At one point, Baby did start running, and she has a great little stride.  Maybe someday she’ll go with the boys ;-)

We then spent some time at the playground next to the Dexter library.  Gordon taught us when we should jump out of a swing using physics, and he climbed the giant rock with the kids.  Ethan nearly gave Rebecca a heart attack, doing underdog with Tater.

Gordon is definitely the FUN-cle!

We then headed over to the Dexter cider mill for cider and donuts.  The line was wrapped around the mill, but it moved quickly.  They were delicious as always...to us AND the wasps.  And Culver’s for a quick lunch?  Hmmmmm…..

Baby had requested birthday dinner at Ford’s Garage (never a bad idea!), and they were kind enough to give her a free dessert.  We headed back home for carving pumpkins, and a piñata.  Once again, Glo used her skills to decorate a chocolate cake in the spookiest way possible, and we opened gifts.

This might be one of my favorite pictures of her ever.

It was really all that we wanted.  Just a day with Baby, celebrating her ninth birthday.  It’s crazy to think of how quickly she is growing up.  I cringe when I think about it, but I also am excited to see where she goes over the next nine years!

Like Dominos....

It all began with glare.  Simple, obnoxious, I-can't-stand-it-anymore glare. Our 60" rear projection TV in the family room was basically unviewable except after 10 o'clock at night.  The glare from the windows was making it impossible to see anything during my 10 minute lunch break each day, and something had to change. Too, the TV didn't fit in the entertainment center from Germany.  John, wanting bigger and better, hadn't considered that the space is only 40" wide.  For the past five years, I have been nagged by 6" of overhang on both sides of the TV stand. I went to Lowe's to price blinds.  $1,043 for five blinds, and that was at 20% off. I figured a new TV would be cheaper than that.  I was right, even with the state-of-the-art receiver and new HDMI cables that sly salesman told us we needed to have. But where to put the old TV?  It just needed a quiet, dark place to retire. Glo's bedroom.  Her TV was a relic from the paleoneoneand...

The Quest for Birkenstocks

One of the main reasons I go to Germany every couple of years is to restock my supply of Birkenstocks.  I started buying them when I lived there, and I basically can't live without them now.  It just about kills me when a pair runs its course and needs to be thrown away.  I think in my lifetime, I've thrown away only three pairs.  One that never was quite right (the straps were plastic and would cut into my skin after a long day), one pair that I wore gardening one too many times (the brown dirt stains wouldn't come out of the white leather), and the pair that I was wearing when I broke my ankle (they were an unfortunate casualty of broken ankle PTSD because those purple and blue paisleys go down as one of my favorite pairs of all time).  I only threw out the garden ones a couple of days before I left for Germany, because I knew I would be getting a new pair. The only store where I have ever bought my Birkenstocks is Hoffmann's in Speicher.  (Well okay, t...

Thinking Beyond Ourselves

In our church, most adults hold a “calling”.  What this really means is they have a job, or a specific way to serve within the local congregation.  We believe that this calling is inspired from God—it’s a specific way that he wants us to serve, so that we can either learn and grow ourselves, or so that we can help someone else. I have had more callings in the church than I can count, and with few exceptions, I have loved every one of them.  I have come to love people (adults, teens and kids) who I might never have met.  I have learned much--from how to organize a Christmas music program, to how to make a Sunday School lesson meaningful to apathetic teenagers.  I have served as president of the children’s organization, and I have been the leader of 30 young, single adults. With every calling comes a lot of work.  Of course, the amount of work one puts into a calling is up to an individual.  I choose to put everything into a calling.  I give up ho...
