November. A Month of Gratitude

There are many posts out there on Facebook during the month of November about gratitude.  Each day, the author posts something they are grateful for.  I like the idea, but today someone posted a different take on it all.

I'm challenging the Kennedy family to play along.  You are all authors on this blog and can edit any of my posts.  So each day, if you have time, choose to edit the post for the day and add your own take.  Knowing all of you, this may just be me, and if so, I'll delete everything at the end of the month, but if not, we'll have some cherished memories and thoughts.

Day One:  Post a picture or share your thoughts about clouds.

When I think of clouds, I think of our home here in Pennsylvania.  We live on top of a mountain, so we see some pretty fantastic cloud displays, especially in the winter when we don't see the sun very much.

However, looking through my photos (trying to find the above photo), I discovered that clouds play a pretty big part in our lives in general.

Grand Cayman clouds are never a bad thing for us whitie Kennedys.

Hello Philadelphia clouds. Thanks for making the temple look even more beautiful :-)

As much as I don't prefer to be west of the Mississippi river, the Utah clouds provide a rather stunning backdrop.

But my favorite clouds of all are to be found in Michigan--Northern Michigan specifically.  You can ask anyone who has traveled up north with me at the beginning of any Interlochen summer.  We can always tell we are getting close by the clouds (and I mention it every time).  I love Michigan clouds.

Ethan:

I know this isn't meant to be a grateful month of posting, but I do think I'm grateful for clouds because when I look out the window in the morning and consider what to wear, clouds have a big impact on that. No clouds? Probably means it's sunny and warm, so I may or may not need a jacket or a coat. A flat grey expanse of clouds that don't seem to have a break? It's going to be cold with possibly some rain, so I'll make sure to prepare for that accordingly. Fluffy clouds moving along in the sky? Definitely windy, so while it may be warm, it's not going to feel warm. I can't actually look out the window and see what the weather will be like for the rest of the day, but the clouds are a pretty good indicator, so I'll follow their advice!

Clouds:

I'm sure clouds are great during all four seasons, but I especially love clouds in the fall. There is nothing better than walking outside on a chilly, cloudy day. It could even be raining, I'm okay with that! Just put on a sweater, a cute pair of boots, and grab a warm apple cider and you've got yourself a pretty perfect day!

Mark:

When I first saw this post, I was honestly like "what do I know about clouds?" And like I know in photography they work really well to frame a picture, but I didn't think that applied to me... Until I started looking for pictures of them in my mission pictures, and I realized, Russia has the COOLEST clouds ever!!! Literally, the fact that the country is completely flat lets you see clouds for miles, and maybe it's from their higher level of pollution, but the sunsets that happened right outside our apartment in St. Petersburg? Some of the most colorful clouds I've ever seen. I couldn't really decide which picture to use, but here are some(:

SURPRISE!!

When the pizza guy came to the door last night, here's what John saw: It took a few seconds for John to process who the pizza delivery man was, but when he did, he was incredibly happy (and couldn't stop saying "heeeeyyyyy....".  It was Jared Moran, John's best friend. And me, I just knelt down, right then and there, and began repenting of all the lies that I have told over the last four months, hiding this most amazing surprise :-)  I told Sarah the other day that I was glad to see the light at the end of the falsehood tunnel, because if I kept this up much longer, I was destined to end up in liars' hell... Jared ran the Air Force marathon with John last year.  It was his first marathon, and from what he told us, his last.  However, he called in June and said he was coming again, but I was supposed to keep it a surprise from John.  I'm not sure what changed his mind, but we sure are glad he did.  John hates runnings marathons alone, and ther...

Like Dominos....

It all began with glare.  Simple, obnoxious, I-can't-stand-it-anymore glare. Our 60" rear projection TV in the family room was basically unviewable except after 10 o'clock at night.  The glare from the windows was making it impossible to see anything during my 10 minute lunch break each day, and something had to change. Too, the TV didn't fit in the entertainment center from Germany.  John, wanting bigger and better, hadn't considered that the space is only 40" wide.  For the past five years, I have been nagged by 6" of overhang on both sides of the TV stand. I went to Lowe's to price blinds.  $1,043 for five blinds, and that was at 20% off. I figured a new TV would be cheaper than that.  I was right, even with the state-of-the-art receiver and new HDMI cables that sly salesman told us we needed to have. But where to put the old TV?  It just needed a quiet, dark place to retire. Glo's bedroom.  Her TV was a relic from the paleoneoneand...

Getting Hannie Home

Knowing that Hannah was leaving on her mission to Ecuador February 7, I needed to get Hannie home.  To her credit, she took care of mostly everything out in Utah, including finding someone to buy her apartment contract.  When I got there, it was all about driving her around so she could take care of last minute things (selling back her books, mailing back a rented book, turning in her work stuff at the library), but really it was about some good old girl time too.  Eating at some of Provo's great eateries and buying cupcakes. Kitty, sampling some of the goods. Ah cupcakes.  Sweet Tooth Fairy bakery has become a tradition every time I visit Utah.  Seriously, they sell the most delicious cupcakes and cookies there.  It made sense to me to buy eight cupcakes for the two of us for a three day drive home.  Little did I know... One of the things that I have done too many times to count now is helping my college-age kids move in and out of their apart...
