Day Fourteen: Favorite Vacation

I always think that the latest vacation I've taken is the best vacation, and seeing as we don't have many "bad" vacations, it makes sense.  However, there are two that stand out:

Iceland.  I know, I know.  It's really the most recent vacation I've taken, but on the scale of "where would you most like to return", Iceland is the top locale.

Alaska.  Back in 2003, I took a two-week live-aboard adventure with National Geographic Expeditions with my mom along the passage that connects Seattle with Juneau, Alaska.  While things were dicey with my mom, the trip itself was one of those trips-of-a-lifetime.  The boat only held 40 or so people, plus the crew, so we were able to visit islands that larger boats couldn't.  And we had the chance to kayak around the islands, or hike over them, most of which didn't hold any residents...well, except the furry brown kind.  It was remote, and raw, and beautiful.  And every night, I would come back to gourmet food, either freshly caught or bought from local fishermen.  We saw everything too from that boat.  Moose, white grizzly bears (yes, they exist), orcas swimming in pods (most every morning), sea otters, brown grizzly bears.  It was amazing.  I've always told John that if I had a windfall of money, I would take the family on that trip.

Glo:
You know I can't pinpoint an exact trip, but going to Europe on trips is definitely my favorite.  It's partially the things we do there, but it's more the ability to do them.  Walking around the "village" because that's what size and kind of community they are, or in the city being able to walk around these huge glorious parks, or hiking around these beautiful landscapes, even just driving in Europe is so peaceful and enjoyable to look at.  It's more the feel of Europe I enjoy.  Even though it has these huge bustling cities, it still pays homage to it's roots with reverence.  Being a small farmer in Europe is respected.  They are able to respect their countries, maybe because of such a hard past, but they really love their cultures, communities, and land of their countries, and so when you go there you feel  it and it's so good and happy.  Anyway, Germany, Ireland, even the cities like Riga and Warsaw with their huge parks still felt like you could get away from the hustle and bustle and just enjoy nature and the outdoors and the land.

John - Any vacation I go on with my family is great but I do have some extra special trips that stand out in my mind.  I have a special place in my heart for the first cruise we went on as a family.  We were all together, the kids were still young, we learned to scuba dive and I remember it felt peaceful in a strange cruise way.  I also have very happy memories of our trip to Iceland with Mommy.  Glo and Mommy and I had a lot of fun on our trip to Universal last spring staying in the Cabana Bay Beach Resort.  I have good memories of Northern Ireland and trips to Ireland in general.  I enjoyed the trip Mommy and I took to the Grand Canyon a few years ago.  I have fond memories of a trip we took to England when we stayed in a manor house with a fancy restaurant and we visited the Lake District.  So many fun trips we have taken as a family!  And all due to Mommy and her wanderlust.  Thanks Mommy for all the fun memories.

Stuck Between a Rock and a Hard Place

I'm writing this, not as a complaint, but as a plea.  If anyone has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it. My children are talented.  In fact, every child that I have ever met is talented in some way.  That's the fun thing about meeting kids--discovering those hidden talents. Some of the talents my children possess are very public--you guessed it...music.  Some aren't so public--kindness and generosity. My kids are frequently judged by other children because of their musical talents.  Other kids see them as "snobs" because they play their instruments well and because they are willing to share those talents whenever asked. My kids never play with arrogance.  They recognize that they are better at music than most kids their age, but they never, ever show it.  In fact, they are very generous with compliments towards other kids and their efforts with music.  I have raised them to appreciate anyone who tries to do anything with music--it's ...

Redefining Charity

I like attending church on Sunday for many different reasons, but I dislike the meetings for one very large reason:  discussions regarding charity. In case you don't remember your Sunday School lessons, charity is defined as the pure love of Christ.  If you were to actually look up the word in a dictionary, it would say, "See John Kennedy". That's right.  My wonderful husband is the perfect embodiment of charity. His life basically moves from one charitable act to another. Take any given Saturday.  He can found building some large structure on our property because I think we need it.  He can be found, rebuilding a pond for an old Indian woman who lives alone and needs some help.  On his way to a church picnic, he will stop to help an old woman reseal her driveway, missing one of his favorite meals in the world:  a POTLUCK! Other days?  He stops to help any person on the side of the road with car troubles. He'll drive 2.5 hours to a ...

The TOOTH that Broke the Camel's Back

1.  Take an already busy doctor and install an EMR (Electronic Medical Record) in his office.  Kiss him goodnight at midnight as he begins to "preload" charts for future visits. 2.  Host a general authority of the church for our stake conference this weekend.  Receive a long "to do" list of jobs just five days before the conference. 3.  Feel stress because John is stressed.  Try to do his jobs around the house so that he doesn't have to worry about them. 4.  Have 16 puppies. 5.  Decide to build outside area for puppies.  Borrow backhoe from neighbor.  Watch John work long past the setting sun, and wake up before anyone else to dig. 6.  Use our own tractor to move the dirt.  Watch bucket malfunction, cut the fuel line and destroy the fuel pump.  Try to catch the leaking diesel fuel in a bucket. 7.  Catch cold last weekend.  Dread colds like a hemophiliac dreads a small cut.  Nurse fever, congestio...
