Spring Break, 2023--Engagement Photos!

We had several options for church on Sunday--the meeting was lackluster, but I'm always thankful when there's a church nearby. There was a married couple who had been baptized the day before so appreciating what a gift that is for missionaries, it was beautiful to see them confirmed.

We went back to the house and took naps.  And then had spaghetti.  And then took engagement photos.  And watched Game 9 of the World Chess Championships. Or maybe it was a different order.  Somehow, by the end of the day, we had done it all ;-)

Chess was super fun to watch! Gordon follows a guy who plays through the game in recap format in about 20 minutes.  It's exciting...possibly more exciting than watching the actual two hour game ;-) Glo and I were hooked and watched the rest of the games until a new champion was crowned.

Glo and Gordon also made pasta with garlic bread and fruit salad.  Man, I'm not usually a pasta person, but it was delicious!

Glo had asked me to take engagement photos of her and Gordon that she could post on social media.  I get it--it's the first time as a couple that you are saying "we are a couple" so you want some good photos.  However, I told her again and again that these will not be their OFFICIAL engagement photos because gosh darn it, I want those to be AMAZING! Plus, I didn't come prepared with my Canon, so I felt a bit hamstringed using only my iPhone.  However, when you have a couple who loves each other as much as these two do, it's not difficult to take a few pictures for social media ;-)

Basically every picture was great, but I had two favorites:

What are the chances we would find a street sign like this?

This is a common pose for the two of them.  As Glo says, Gordon is always squeezing her, and being the touchy person she is, it always makes her smile.  THIS photo could possibly be a real engagement picture ;-)

This picture makes me laugh! They had been holding a kiss while I took several photos, but eventually he stuck his tongue out and she busted out laughing.

And of course, when it's all done, all bets are off...except this is how they travel in the back seat together: her always laying on his lap.

Our rental home had a hot tub in the back yard.  We hadn't used it yet, and I wondered if it was even up and running, but we took the cover off and it was ready to go! I figured the two of them might like some time together, so even though Gordon insisted I come out, I just left the two of them alone.  I went in and laid down on my bed to read, but I soon discovered that I could hear their conversation through the window of my bedroom.  Now let's think about this: they are out in the hot tub, ALONE.  What would most of us do? Yeah, they spent a good hour just discussing the societal problems of the world and attempted to solve ALL of them.  It was yet another sign to me that they are perfect for each other <3

The Quest for Birkenstocks

One of the main reasons I go to Germany every couple of years is to restock my supply of Birkenstocks.  I started buying them when I lived there, and I basically can't live without them now.  It just about kills me when a pair runs its course and needs to be thrown away.  I think in my lifetime, I've thrown away only three pairs.  One that never was quite right (the straps were plastic and would cut into my skin after a long day), one pair that I wore gardening one too many times (the brown dirt stains wouldn't come out of the white leather), and the pair that I was wearing when I broke my ankle (they were an unfortunate casualty of broken ankle PTSD because those purple and blue paisleys go down as one of my favorite pairs of all time).  I only threw out the garden ones a couple of days before I left for Germany, because I knew I would be getting a new pair. The only store where I have ever bought my Birkenstocks is Hoffmann's in Speicher.  (Well okay, t...

Stuck Between a Rock and a Hard Place

I'm writing this, not as a complaint, but as a plea.  If anyone has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it. My children are talented.  In fact, every child that I have ever met is talented in some way.  That's the fun thing about meeting kids--discovering those hidden talents. Some of the talents my children possess are very public--you guessed it...music.  Some aren't so public--kindness and generosity. My kids are frequently judged by other children because of their musical talents.  Other kids see them as "snobs" because they play their instruments well and because they are willing to share those talents whenever asked. My kids never play with arrogance.  They recognize that they are better at music than most kids their age, but they never, ever show it.  In fact, they are very generous with compliments towards other kids and their efforts with music.  I have raised them to appreciate anyone who tries to do anything with music--it's ...

Redefining Charity

I like attending church on Sunday for many different reasons, but I dislike the meetings for one very large reason:  discussions regarding charity. In case you don't remember your Sunday School lessons, charity is defined as the pure love of Christ.  If you were to actually look up the word in a dictionary, it would say, "See John Kennedy". That's right.  My wonderful husband is the perfect embodiment of charity. His life basically moves from one charitable act to another. Take any given Saturday.  He can found building some large structure on our property because I think we need it.  He can be found, rebuilding a pond for an old Indian woman who lives alone and needs some help.  On his way to a church picnic, he will stop to help an old woman reseal her driveway, missing one of his favorite meals in the world:  a POTLUCK! Other days?  He stops to help any person on the side of the road with car troubles. He'll drive 2.5 hours to a ...
