Graduation Week, 2023--Black Monday

When Glo crawled into bed the night before, I noticed that she had a cough.  There's nothing like a cough to get me worrying...

Sure enough, in the morning, Glo was down for the count, and Gordon, despite trying to deny it, was down as well.  I thought that it was probably chlorine poisoning from the hot tub, but when I came down with the same symptoms two days later, I realized that they were really sick.

Unfortunately, I had thought I was through the worst of lung problems (having survived Pike's Peak), so I had stupidly sent most of my inhalers and all my steroids home with Hannah.  I had a couple of puffs left on my Breztri inhaler, and after Glo had used them, she was breathing much better so I knew we had to do something.

First though, we had to leave the house.  I felt SICK about saying goodbye.  It was one of the most beautiful homes I've ever stayed in, and it was now full of happy memories for me.  Did I mention that the art on the walls was created by the owner of the home? Yeah, after I asked her how the artist who signed the paintings was related to her (they had the same surnames), she told me that it was her.  I then asked her how I could purchase one, and she sent me to her site that had five paintings for sale at that moment.  I snapped one up, and that morning it was sitting on our back porch, wrapped and ready to go!  I couldn't think of a better memento for Glo and Gordon <3  She had several of Garden of the Gods, but I took the one of Pike's Peak since we could see it from our home and since *cough* we went to the top of it ;-)

I sure hope Glo and Gordon can find a house like this someday...or at least create a house like this--it would be perfect for them--so I took lots of pictures to record all the little details:

Glo had seen "Meowolf" on my list of possible Monday activities, and after hearing that Mark had gone to the one in Santa Fe, she wanted to go there.  However, just driving a short ways out of Colorado Springs, I knew we needed to do something for the sickies.  I pulled off at an exit, found a CVS and called John.  He called in two inhaler prescriptions, but they weren't going to be ready for a while.  I looked for nearby restaurant and found this fabulous joint called Crave Burgers.  Man alive, that was some good food.  The garlic parmesan fries alone were amazing.  While sitting there, I noticed a set of elders behind us and paid for their food as well.

We went back to CVS, Glo convinced Gordon to take some ibuprofen and some acetaminophen, they took a couple of hits off of the inhalers and we were off to Denver.

I wish Glo blogged because she would definitely have better things to say about Meowolf.  It was just straight up WEIRD in my book, but Gordon and I both went to support her.

And from there we drove to the airport, I sadly returned "Beemie" and we flew to Utah.  They had DnD that night, so there was no rest for the weary, but they were excited to tell their friends that they are engaged.  Their friends didn't actually notice Glo's ring (despite her best attempts to reach for everything with her left hand and to brush her hair off of her face with it as well) until afterwards when she was eating.  Most were happy for the both of them....but I'm not sure Kevin will ever come around....

Like Dominos....

It all began with glare.  Simple, obnoxious, I-can't-stand-it-anymore glare. Our 60" rear projection TV in the family room was basically unviewable except after 10 o'clock at night.  The glare from the windows was making it impossible to see anything during my 10 minute lunch break each day, and something had to change. Too, the TV didn't fit in the entertainment center from Germany.  John, wanting bigger and better, hadn't considered that the space is only 40" wide.  For the past five years, I have been nagged by 6" of overhang on both sides of the TV stand. I went to Lowe's to price blinds.  $1,043 for five blinds, and that was at 20% off. I figured a new TV would be cheaper than that.  I was right, even with the state-of-the-art receiver and new HDMI cables that sly salesman told us we needed to have. But where to put the old TV?  It just needed a quiet, dark place to retire. Glo's bedroom.  Her TV was a relic from the paleoneoneand...

The Quest for Birkenstocks

One of the main reasons I go to Germany every couple of years is to restock my supply of Birkenstocks.  I started buying them when I lived there, and I basically can't live without them now.  It just about kills me when a pair runs its course and needs to be thrown away.  I think in my lifetime, I've thrown away only three pairs.  One that never was quite right (the straps were plastic and would cut into my skin after a long day), one pair that I wore gardening one too many times (the brown dirt stains wouldn't come out of the white leather), and the pair that I was wearing when I broke my ankle (they were an unfortunate casualty of broken ankle PTSD because those purple and blue paisleys go down as one of my favorite pairs of all time).  I only threw out the garden ones a couple of days before I left for Germany, because I knew I would be getting a new pair. The only store where I have ever bought my Birkenstocks is Hoffmann's in Speicher.  (Well okay, t...

Thinking Beyond Ourselves

In our church, most adults hold a “calling”.  What this really means is they have a job, or a specific way to serve within the local congregation.  We believe that this calling is inspired from God—it’s a specific way that he wants us to serve, so that we can either learn and grow ourselves, or so that we can help someone else. I have had more callings in the church than I can count, and with few exceptions, I have loved every one of them.  I have come to love people (adults, teens and kids) who I might never have met.  I have learned much--from how to organize a Christmas music program, to how to make a Sunday School lesson meaningful to apathetic teenagers.  I have served as president of the children’s organization, and I have been the leader of 30 young, single adults. With every calling comes a lot of work.  Of course, the amount of work one puts into a calling is up to an individual.  I choose to put everything into a calling.  I give up ho...
