An Awesome Gift...

There are a couple of Christmas gifts from years past from members of the Kennedy family that stand out in my mind, because they were so meaningful to me.  Seriously, I love gifts where I can tell that people have personally thought about the family and me.

The wooden wall hanging that Bud and Melanie sent to us several years ago with the words "Kennedy, est. 1989) still hangs in our front hall.  I LOVE that thing (and it frequently ends up in photos we take because we take our photos in the front hall).

The copper measuring spoons that Beth sent me after living with us for a couple of months.  I had stolen a copper teaspoon from my mother's set years earlier, and I loved it so much that I used it for any measurements, teaspoon or not (sorry about that, Mom, if you're reading this--I was young and wild and free when I did it).  Beth remedied that situation by sending me my own set.  I still have it.

So, Katrina has been promising me a Christmas gift from the kids for months now.  I think it might have started out as a "thank you" gift for Kennedy Kousin Kamp, but with the length of time it took to create it, it became a Christmas gift.  I got it in the mail today, and it has to be in the running for one of the best gifts I have ever received!

Rachel, that sneaky girl, took all of the photos from Kennedy Kousin Kamp, and organized them into a deck of Kennedy Kousin Kamp playing cards!

For real!

I could hardly believe it.  All the fun times we had this summer at K3 are now saved onto a deck of cards. I don't even know if the Alpine cousins appreciate the fact that I collect decks of playing cards from everywhere I visit, but I do!  In fact, I have a whole drawer full of them (mostly unopened).  The cutest thing was that these were really to remind us of the late-night poker games.  With the exception of the first game, I didn't attend any, although I heard all kinds of treats were used at "money".  Starbursts, maybe?  I just remember Mark saying something about the fact that he had discovered which candy didn't get slimy after trading hands :-)

Although these pictures don't capture how amazing these cards are, here's just a taste:

These are the backs of the cards.  I took this picture only minutes after we had arrived in Manhattan!
I saw the headline and couldn't resist taking a picture of everyone.  Little did I know how "insanely fun" K3 would be!

Everyone has their own number.  No surprise--Mark ended up on the Jokers :-)
Rachel made me "King".  Glad to know I earned that spot :-)

Anyway, this is the most amazing gift, and although I've already been making plans for this summer's K3, I am even MORE excited for it now!  I love these kids, and I'm so thankful for the time I get to spend with them.

The Quest for Birkenstocks

One of the main reasons I go to Germany every couple of years is to restock my supply of Birkenstocks.  I started buying them when I lived there, and I basically can't live without them now.  It just about kills me when a pair runs its course and needs to be thrown away.  I think in my lifetime, I've thrown away only three pairs.  One that never was quite right (the straps were plastic and would cut into my skin after a long day), one pair that I wore gardening one too many times (the brown dirt stains wouldn't come out of the white leather), and the pair that I was wearing when I broke my ankle (they were an unfortunate casualty of broken ankle PTSD because those purple and blue paisleys go down as one of my favorite pairs of all time).  I only threw out the garden ones a couple of days before I left for Germany, because I knew I would be getting a new pair. The only store where I have ever bought my Birkenstocks is Hoffmann's in Speicher.  (Well okay, t...

Stuck Between a Rock and a Hard Place

I'm writing this, not as a complaint, but as a plea.  If anyone has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it. My children are talented.  In fact, every child that I have ever met is talented in some way.  That's the fun thing about meeting kids--discovering those hidden talents. Some of the talents my children possess are very public--you guessed it...music.  Some aren't so public--kindness and generosity. My kids are frequently judged by other children because of their musical talents.  Other kids see them as "snobs" because they play their instruments well and because they are willing to share those talents whenever asked. My kids never play with arrogance.  They recognize that they are better at music than most kids their age, but they never, ever show it.  In fact, they are very generous with compliments towards other kids and their efforts with music.  I have raised them to appreciate anyone who tries to do anything with music--it's ...

Redefining Charity

I like attending church on Sunday for many different reasons, but I dislike the meetings for one very large reason:  discussions regarding charity. In case you don't remember your Sunday School lessons, charity is defined as the pure love of Christ.  If you were to actually look up the word in a dictionary, it would say, "See John Kennedy". That's right.  My wonderful husband is the perfect embodiment of charity. His life basically moves from one charitable act to another. Take any given Saturday.  He can found building some large structure on our property because I think we need it.  He can be found, rebuilding a pond for an old Indian woman who lives alone and needs some help.  On his way to a church picnic, he will stop to help an old woman reseal her driveway, missing one of his favorite meals in the world:  a POTLUCK! Other days?  He stops to help any person on the side of the road with car troubles. He'll drive 2.5 hours to a ...
