On the Hunt to Get Lost

Day Two of Denver promised all kinds of good things.  We had slept soundly in our wonderfully air conditioned rental home, the sky was blue and adventure was calling.

John shared strawberry shortcake
with Brother :-)
Thankfully, Ethan had planned our entire trip for us, so all we had to do was consult the itinerary for the day and hop in the van.  First stop?  The Denver Biscuit Company!  While I rarely meet a restaurant I don't like, I do believe this restaurant was created in heaven specifically for me.  A menu based around baking powder biscuits with "sausage biscuits and gravy" being the standard.  It was delicious and hip and fun and a great way to start the day.

We were headed to the beginning of another activity when Ethan asked us to stop by a UPS store because he had forms he needed to submit for a new job in Washington DC.  We thought it would just take a minute or two, but it ended up taking closer to 45 minutes.  Since the UPS store was located inside of the Denver Convention Center, Baby and I headed out exploring.  It only took us a few minutes to find the "Blue Bear", a 40-foot, metal/plastic blue bear that stands outside of the convention center looking in.  It was part of a multi-million dollar art grant given to the city of Denver.  Baby loved it.  We played tag and chased each other around, and we decided to go inside the convention center to see what Mr. Blue Bear was looking at.  And while inside, we used the potty and ran a couple of races (she ALWAYS wins) and then went back out.  For the rest of the trip, she was asking me to go and see Blue Bear <3

Baby honestly wasn't sure what to think about the big Blue Bear when we first came up.
And this is exactly how she was studying him ;-)
Probably my favorite picture of the week <3

The Start Line
Then we were off on a scavenger hunt (Big City Hunt).  Ethan had found it somewhere online (Trip Advisor maybe?) and had paid for us to all participate.  All we had to do was park in front of the Colorado capitol building, sign up via our phones and GO!  We each had specific titles and were texted different assignments over the next few hours.  Ethan was our leader, Rebecca was our Architect, I was the Artist in Residence, and John was the photographer.  We would be required to answer trivia questions in a certain amount of time, or take a picture of something specific, or be creative in some way.  In the meantime, we walked all over downtown Denver, figuring it all out.  It was great fun to see the city while answering questions and taking pictures.

Probably the funniest moment of the hunt was when we needed to find someone "tickled pink".  For greater points, we wanted to be clever so we figured we needed to tickle someone wearing pink.  Ethan and I started out, chasing down a woman whom we had seen earlier, wearing a pink tank top, but we tried to be stealthy about the picture.

Realizing it didn't work very well, a woman came out of a nearby doorway wearing pink pants.  Again, it wasn't like she was going to let Ethan actually tickle her (but she did bend her leg to look cute in the picture).

Finally, we took sleeping Brother off of John's chest and got a REAL picture (just look at John's smile) although he might be more of a "tickled coral" picture :-).

The hardest part about it all was that John was really suffering from his torn muscle from the Lilac Race a couple of days before.  He just didn't have the stamina to walk the four miles we ended up walking, and it was sad to see him suffering.

The last stretch, returning to The Capitol Building

Too, Ethan was disappointed in our ninth place finish.  However, I reminded him that we weren't really trying to "win" the day.  It was much more fun to find a nearby Jamba Juice and get some refreshment on a very hot day.  And to take Baby's sandals off so we could put her feet in a fountain.  And to just have a really fun time together.  And of course it made me happy that we learned something in the meantime!

I would like to say that we had an amazing evening, but I wanted nothing more than to order pizza and to watch The Bachelorette in the evening :-)

The FIRST of the Best Days of My Life

I'm always amazed when people can answer the question, "What was the best day of your life?"  For me, I've never had a specific answer.  The typical response of "my wedding day" doesn't work for me, because in all honesty, our wedding day was pretty sad with no family in attendance.  The second most popular answer of "the day my child was born" only conjures up feelings of pain, misery and exhaustion for me.  Really, up to this point, the best day of my life is anytime my family is together, and we are laughing, and talking, and ... being together.  I guess if I could string all of those moments into one solitary day, that would be the best day of my life. Everything changed though on Tuesday, October 27, 2015.  In fact, I feel quite relieved now, knowing that I can answer the proverbial question successfully and succinctly, for on that day, Anneliese Margaret Kennedy joined our family, and there has never been a better day in my life. Po...

SURPRISE!!

When the pizza guy came to the door last night, here's what John saw: It took a few seconds for John to process who the pizza delivery man was, but when he did, he was incredibly happy (and couldn't stop saying "heeeeyyyyy....".  It was Jared Moran, John's best friend. And me, I just knelt down, right then and there, and began repenting of all the lies that I have told over the last four months, hiding this most amazing surprise :-)  I told Sarah the other day that I was glad to see the light at the end of the falsehood tunnel, because if I kept this up much longer, I was destined to end up in liars' hell... Jared ran the Air Force marathon with John last year.  It was his first marathon, and from what he told us, his last.  However, he called in June and said he was coming again, but I was supposed to keep it a surprise from John.  I'm not sure what changed his mind, but we sure are glad he did.  John hates runnings marathons alone, and ther...

Stuck Between a Rock and a Hard Place

I'm writing this, not as a complaint, but as a plea.  If anyone has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it. My children are talented.  In fact, every child that I have ever met is talented in some way.  That's the fun thing about meeting kids--discovering those hidden talents. Some of the talents my children possess are very public--you guessed it...music.  Some aren't so public--kindness and generosity. My kids are frequently judged by other children because of their musical talents.  Other kids see them as "snobs" because they play their instruments well and because they are willing to share those talents whenever asked. My kids never play with arrogance.  They recognize that they are better at music than most kids their age, but they never, ever show it.  In fact, they are very generous with compliments towards other kids and their efforts with music.  I have raised them to appreciate anyone who tries to do anything with music--it's ...
