24 Hours with Hannah

With John being gone so many weekends lately, Hannie and I have quite a bit of time together (at least until she gets married in three short months).  We decided to take a little girls vacation this past Easter weekend.

We almost didn't go to the Tigers game on Friday night (because we had been to one on Thursday), but as soon as we walked in and saw all of the Harry Potter set-up, we were glad to be there!  It was Harry Potter night at Comerica Park!  And what does the park provide when it's HP night? Free caricatures!

As soon as I sat down, I used my charisma and became quick friends with Bob ;-) But not being prepared, I didn't really have much of my Tigers apparel on.  And my hair wasn't looking great.  So I saw that he had his readers on his easel, and I asked to don them so my hair might look better.  In my mind, I thought he would translate them to sunglasses, but no.  I have readers on my head which makes the drawing even more hilarious! And yes, I absolutely love it.  And of course Hannah looks like a million dollars in hers.

The game was terrific, and the Tigers won, but we didn't stay until the end.  We had reservations in Indianapolis that night so we drove the four hours there, getting in around 1 a.m.

The Detroit temple is closed for cleaning for two weeks, and knowing that one of the best things I can do to prepare for Easter is to attend the temple, I made appointments for us on Saturday morning.

I've never been to this temple, but I've wanted to go for a long time.  It didn't disappoint.  It was stunning from the outside--beautiful flowers and the greenest lawn with birdsong everywhere--and there is such beauty and peace on the inside.  I loved every minute of it, and I hope that we can go back someday.

Tito, the penguin, also joined us.  I bought Tito for Hannah before she left for Alabama on one condition: she had to go to the temple monthly or I would take him back.  Without fail, she attended the temple on schedule and Tito always rode in the car with her to the temple.  He decided to join us this time as well.

Little did I know that Ethan was only ten minutes away.  He had signed up to run the Carmel, Indiana half-marathon, but due to terrible storms that morning, it was canceled.  He left, and it was only after Rebecca checked his location and saw that we were near that he called us at our post-temple visit to Cracker Barrel for lunch.  Hannah, without thinking, scored "one" on the peg board game and quickly set it aside, being happy to be a "genius" ;-) We also looked through the shop--Cracker Barrel is surprisingly a really great place to find gifts.  I found about a million baby girl outfits that I wanted to buy for Baby Bridge, but not knowing if it's a girl or boy YET, I figured I should probably wait.

What a great weekend: baseball, caricatures, the temple and Cracker Barrel....all with my favorite oldest daughter <3

Stuck Between a Rock and a Hard Place

I'm writing this, not as a complaint, but as a plea.  If anyone has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it. My children are talented.  In fact, every child that I have ever met is talented in some way.  That's the fun thing about meeting kids--discovering those hidden talents. Some of the talents my children possess are very public--you guessed it...music.  Some aren't so public--kindness and generosity. My kids are frequently judged by other children because of their musical talents.  Other kids see them as "snobs" because they play their instruments well and because they are willing to share those talents whenever asked. My kids never play with arrogance.  They recognize that they are better at music than most kids their age, but they never, ever show it.  In fact, they are very generous with compliments towards other kids and their efforts with music.  I have raised them to appreciate anyone who tries to do anything with music--it's ...

Redefining Charity

I like attending church on Sunday for many different reasons, but I dislike the meetings for one very large reason:  discussions regarding charity. In case you don't remember your Sunday School lessons, charity is defined as the pure love of Christ.  If you were to actually look up the word in a dictionary, it would say, "See John Kennedy". That's right.  My wonderful husband is the perfect embodiment of charity. His life basically moves from one charitable act to another. Take any given Saturday.  He can found building some large structure on our property because I think we need it.  He can be found, rebuilding a pond for an old Indian woman who lives alone and needs some help.  On his way to a church picnic, he will stop to help an old woman reseal her driveway, missing one of his favorite meals in the world:  a POTLUCK! Other days?  He stops to help any person on the side of the road with car troubles. He'll drive 2.5 hours to a ...

The TOOTH that Broke the Camel's Back

1.  Take an already busy doctor and install an EMR (Electronic Medical Record) in his office.  Kiss him goodnight at midnight as he begins to "preload" charts for future visits. 2.  Host a general authority of the church for our stake conference this weekend.  Receive a long "to do" list of jobs just five days before the conference. 3.  Feel stress because John is stressed.  Try to do his jobs around the house so that he doesn't have to worry about them. 4.  Have 16 puppies. 5.  Decide to build outside area for puppies.  Borrow backhoe from neighbor.  Watch John work long past the setting sun, and wake up before anyone else to dig. 6.  Use our own tractor to move the dirt.  Watch bucket malfunction, cut the fuel line and destroy the fuel pump.  Try to catch the leaking diesel fuel in a bucket. 7.  Catch cold last weekend.  Dread colds like a hemophiliac dreads a small cut.  Nurse fever, congestio...
