A Birthday Bash for Allison

So as some of you might know, two weekends ago, Allison, (the girl I’m dating) had a birthday! Originally I had just planned to do something with her once I got back to Michigan, but when some of her own birthday plans fell through for the weekend before the 24th, I figured it would be a great time to invite her to PA(:Because, ya know, there’s nothing like experiencing the Kennedy family in real-life.

Thankfully my family was totally down for her coming, and we started planning a classic Kennedy birthday bash. I think I can comfortably say that calling it an AWESOME weekend for all of us would be a SEVERE understatement. What follows though is a list of the highlights, in no particular order (although inevitably, some of the better parts will be at the beginning).

The Birthday Theme: While this fact will DEFINTELY date
Glo is the craziest artist. She did this without me even asking...
this post for future generations, we decided to go with a Pokemon Go theme for the whole party! This included streamers, an Ash-and-company piñata, cake toppers of starter Pokemon and Team Rocket, and T-Shirts to be worn while Pokehunting. Funny thing was a couple weeks before Allison came, me being on Facetime with Mama, and her holding up shirts and flat brims in Hot Topic, asking if I thought Allison and the family would wear them for Pokehunting. Good times(: And while I’m talking about it…

Pokehunting: Yep, there was a lot of it over the weekend. While Allison is definitely the most loving of her Pokemon (as she chooses not to battle them in gyms), we all were driving/walking around for long stretches of time, collecting items from Pokestops, battling occasionally, and catching “dem Pokemahns”(; I was a little worried we were doing it a little too much, but Allison assured me it was all good(: Overall it was very productive...

Charmander Strikes Again…: So it’s the official birthday party and we sing Happy Birthday to Allison. All is well, a birthday wish is made by the guest of honor and Allison starts blowing out the candles. And that’s when the Charmander on the cake decided to enact some sort of revenge plot:

Yep, Allisons hair LIT ON FIRE(: And not just a little bit… Yeah that got a little scary, but thankfully she was ok. I guess just for the future, we’ll avoid the tall, long candles on the outside of the cake…(:

PokePiñata: Also a staple of Kennedy parties, it’s never fun without a helpless paper-maché/cardboard box to beat up(: Mama and Papa were good enough to fill it not just with candy, but with some movies from the Best Buy 5 dollar bin. That’s what I’m talking about.

Now You See Me 2: So honestly, this was just a moment of wanting to see a movie, and it just so happened that Allison wanted, but hadn't yet seen this one(: Actually, I knew pretty early on when we were dating that she loved the first installment of this movie, so it seemed perfect! And even having seen it already, it still has tons the second time around. Definitely a fun way to break up the Pokehunting.

If you've seen Olan Rodgers, look up "Lil Bopee", and you'll understand... #MAGIC
On a side note, this is just how cool my sister is. First try, and she beats the system by winning a duck from the Claw. It was a good first gift for Allison's birthday(:

The Birthday pin (see picture to the left): I have to mention this awesome Birthday Pin we found for Allison, Pokemon themed and everything(: Cool thing was, a couple days later she wore it to Cedar Point too. It just deserved an honorable mention.

The Weekend Meals: One morning, we had waffles. Don’t forget either eggs, bacon, whipped cream, chocolate drizzle, strawberries and fruit salad.

And at some point, we went to Chick-Fil-A. Doesn’t get much better than that.

Okay, but seriously. Isn't she just beautiful?(:
Fun on the Day of the Sun: Allison was so amazing for the weekend, she even came to Church on
Sunday! I guess what I said earlier isn’t actually right, cause despite this being on the bottom of the list, this was one of my favorite parts of the weekend. Over the summer, I haven’t been able to find a time to bring her to Church one Sunday, but this just happened to work out. And she said she was nervous, but she did great. Actually, now with a week gone by, lots of people were asking about her, saying she looked and seemed really nice. I mean, I’m not surprised, but even so I couldn’t have agreed more. She was slayin’(:

Overall, I was just psyched to have Allison there, and how much fun it was. Special thanks to my family for letting her come, and happy birthday Allison! Here's to the fun from the weekend being repeated sometime soon...(:

Like Dominos....

It all began with glare.  Simple, obnoxious, I-can't-stand-it-anymore glare. Our 60" rear projection TV in the family room was basically unviewable except after 10 o'clock at night.  The glare from the windows was making it impossible to see anything during my 10 minute lunch break each day, and something had to change. Too, the TV didn't fit in the entertainment center from Germany.  John, wanting bigger and better, hadn't considered that the space is only 40" wide.  For the past five years, I have been nagged by 6" of overhang on both sides of the TV stand. I went to Lowe's to price blinds.  $1,043 for five blinds, and that was at 20% off. I figured a new TV would be cheaper than that.  I was right, even with the state-of-the-art receiver and new HDMI cables that sly salesman told us we needed to have. But where to put the old TV?  It just needed a quiet, dark place to retire. Glo's bedroom.  Her TV was a relic from the paleoneoneand...

The Quest for Birkenstocks

One of the main reasons I go to Germany every couple of years is to restock my supply of Birkenstocks.  I started buying them when I lived there, and I basically can't live without them now.  It just about kills me when a pair runs its course and needs to be thrown away.  I think in my lifetime, I've thrown away only three pairs.  One that never was quite right (the straps were plastic and would cut into my skin after a long day), one pair that I wore gardening one too many times (the brown dirt stains wouldn't come out of the white leather), and the pair that I was wearing when I broke my ankle (they were an unfortunate casualty of broken ankle PTSD because those purple and blue paisleys go down as one of my favorite pairs of all time).  I only threw out the garden ones a couple of days before I left for Germany, because I knew I would be getting a new pair. The only store where I have ever bought my Birkenstocks is Hoffmann's in Speicher.  (Well okay, t...

Thinking Beyond Ourselves

In our church, most adults hold a “calling”.  What this really means is they have a job, or a specific way to serve within the local congregation.  We believe that this calling is inspired from God—it’s a specific way that he wants us to serve, so that we can either learn and grow ourselves, or so that we can help someone else. I have had more callings in the church than I can count, and with few exceptions, I have loved every one of them.  I have come to love people (adults, teens and kids) who I might never have met.  I have learned much--from how to organize a Christmas music program, to how to make a Sunday School lesson meaningful to apathetic teenagers.  I have served as president of the children’s organization, and I have been the leader of 30 young, single adults. With every calling comes a lot of work.  Of course, the amount of work one puts into a calling is up to an individual.  I choose to put everything into a calling.  I give up ho...
