Michigan Football, 2015

Well, as time passes, and Niki becomes a distant memory (hopefully to be soon a completely forgotten memory), we are finding more and more good things about the engagement being called off.  One of the bonuses for me is an extra season football ticket to all of the Michigan games!  What's a little six hour drive to sit in the Big House with my kids and watch a live game?  It's nothing.  Nothing, I tell you!

The first home game was against Boise State.  Unfortunately, we lost the first game of the season to Utah, but it didn't feel like a loss to me.  With Jim Harbaugh now leading the Wolverines, the team needs time to find their footing.  They did well enough against Utah.  However, having lost so many "gimme" games in the past few years, I was still holding my breath.

When I showed up in Ann Arbor, I headed straight over to the dock that happens to be in Mark and Ethan's apartment complex.  Mark is an assistant rowing coach for one of the high school men's rowing teams, and I knew he was working.  While I couldn't take a really awesome pictures, I did capture him on the sly.

Betcha can't guess which one is Mark? :-)

I feel like no trip to Ann Arbor is complete with a visit to the Melting Pot.  While I brought cupcakes for dessert, decorated in several different team colors, we needed actual sustenance and what better place?

Afterwards, and before the fan horde descended the following day, we drove over to Michigan stadium to just take in the moment...and to just take a few pictures.  Leave a camera in Mark's hands, and nobody will be left without a goofy grin in the pictures.  Needless to say, the security guard was laughing at us laughing at ourselves!

The next day, we were up bright and early.  Ethan wants priority seating next year, so we needed to be checked into the stadium 30 minutes early.  Too, we needed to validate my student ticket.  As soon as I saw the traffic on I-94, I got off and we winged it, getting to S. Seventh and Scio Church road for free parking.  Of course, we made a quick stop at McDonald's for a breakfast of champions!

Turns out, the Haunted Bushes aren't nearly so scary during the day!

While our seats are scattered around the student section (a little birdie told me that Mark might have biffed this up last spring), Ethan and Mark had no reservations about sneaking around the inside of the stadium to get to Rebecca and me.  Yep, they learned from the best!  Rush concert anyone?

As it turns out, nobody really sits in their seats.  We had a whole bunch of empty seats around us at the start of the game, and kids would come up, point at some and say to each other, "Well those seats are empty.  Let's go sit there."

I thought everyone had heard my story about riding in the Good Year blimp when I was a kid.
Nope, nobody knew about it (and I'm not sure they believed it either).
I ask you--is it coincidence that the Good Year blimp is MAIZE and BLUE??

Aside from standing the entire game, and the initial two minutes when Boise State scored a touchdown, it was a great time.  Plus, it was pom-pom Saturday, so no clapping involved (and no cracked hands afterwards)!

And that night (after a lengthy afternoon nap)?  Cottage Inn Pizza for dinner, and several games of spades played until well past midnight.  I mean really, what more can I ask for?

The FIRST of the Best Days of My Life

I'm always amazed when people can answer the question, "What was the best day of your life?"  For me, I've never had a specific answer.  The typical response of "my wedding day" doesn't work for me, because in all honesty, our wedding day was pretty sad with no family in attendance.  The second most popular answer of "the day my child was born" only conjures up feelings of pain, misery and exhaustion for me.  Really, up to this point, the best day of my life is anytime my family is together, and we are laughing, and talking, and ... being together.  I guess if I could string all of those moments into one solitary day, that would be the best day of my life. Everything changed though on Tuesday, October 27, 2015.  In fact, I feel quite relieved now, knowing that I can answer the proverbial question successfully and succinctly, for on that day, Anneliese Margaret Kennedy joined our family, and there has never been a better day in my life. Po...

SURPRISE!!

When the pizza guy came to the door last night, here's what John saw: It took a few seconds for John to process who the pizza delivery man was, but when he did, he was incredibly happy (and couldn't stop saying "heeeeyyyyy....".  It was Jared Moran, John's best friend. And me, I just knelt down, right then and there, and began repenting of all the lies that I have told over the last four months, hiding this most amazing surprise :-)  I told Sarah the other day that I was glad to see the light at the end of the falsehood tunnel, because if I kept this up much longer, I was destined to end up in liars' hell... Jared ran the Air Force marathon with John last year.  It was his first marathon, and from what he told us, his last.  However, he called in June and said he was coming again, but I was supposed to keep it a surprise from John.  I'm not sure what changed his mind, but we sure are glad he did.  John hates runnings marathons alone, and ther...

Stuck Between a Rock and a Hard Place

I'm writing this, not as a complaint, but as a plea.  If anyone has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it. My children are talented.  In fact, every child that I have ever met is talented in some way.  That's the fun thing about meeting kids--discovering those hidden talents. Some of the talents my children possess are very public--you guessed it...music.  Some aren't so public--kindness and generosity. My kids are frequently judged by other children because of their musical talents.  Other kids see them as "snobs" because they play their instruments well and because they are willing to share those talents whenever asked. My kids never play with arrogance.  They recognize that they are better at music than most kids their age, but they never, ever show it.  In fact, they are very generous with compliments towards other kids and their efforts with music.  I have raised them to appreciate anyone who tries to do anything with music--it's ...
